Look at 27-Down: “Lose its spark, as a relationship,” which solves to STALE. These answers add up to a pretty satisfying theme on their own, but at a certain point, I wondered about a second layer of theme in the Down entries - it’s great, and it took a long time to sink into this poor solver’s cranium. The rest of these Across entries solve to well-known terms and products, though a percentage of solvers may know either the mixed drink or the antiquated reference book, but not both. (I always start in the corners, by habit, and either nibble the edges for a while or plow from one to another, depending on my success with clues.)

That yellow light was the coup de grâce for my solve and made me wonder if anyone ever worked through a Sunday puzzle from the inside. “Twisting on an axis” solves to a word that makes infrequent appearances in the puzzle and just looks awkward, but it’s fitting for this grid: SLUING. Also cute, and another golf pun for this solver to chip away at in confusion: “Treacherous places to land for eagles?” are SAND TRAPS, which lead to more strokes, which tend to put you “over par,” making you lose any hope of attaining a bird-related score.ġ2D.
